Dr. Ying-Che Li, Professor of Chinese at UH Manoa, and Dr. Yu-Chong Lin, President of the Hawaii Chapter of the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA), join Bill Sharp in the studio to discuss their Taiwanese sense of identity. The interview starts with their stories of growing up in the 50's and 60's under martial law and the events of 228 (February 28, 1947). They discuss the important events and leading political figures which resulted in Taiwan enjoying tremendous freedom now, as well as more recent items such as the Chen Shui-bian trial and opinions on the military and legislative process. They explain the reasons for stronger ties with mainland China and the reasons Taiwanese have for wanting to keep the status quo. Finally, they share their reactions to the recent movie, Formosa Betrayed.

Cell's Article of the Future

Those who attended NewsMorphosis and heard Temple's keynote on the vision for Peer News may be interested in Cell's "Article of the Future" initiative.

Their approach also features a non-linear approach to presenting information. For the most part, the information is the same, but the format offers a graphical abstract, allows new ways of filtering references, and with each figure, you can either see the caption or its context in the article. A video with two of the authors gives a 5 minute presentation of their research, though I don't know if Cell expects this from all researchers. For me, the advertising felt more intrusive, since the content is no longer a big block, but when I switched to the full-screen view, it wasn't a problem. I'm not sure how they handle searchability; it may be necessary to search within each of the tabs, but perhaps I just need to explore this a little more...

If this becomes standard, I think this could really help people understand research articles more quickly. Also, if you scroll down on Cell's Beta site, you can see some of their past efforts to make information more accessible.

In her speech at the East-West Center on January 12, 2010, Secretary of State Clinton spoke of the US commitment to staying involved in Asia and graciously recognized the interaction between the East-West Center and the State Department. Unfortunately, the trip to Asia and the Pacific she had planned was canceled following the Haiti earthquake, but we're fortunate she was able to visit Hawaii and speak about the United States' future in Asia, multilateral engagement, and women's roles.

The East-West Center is located at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Founded in 1959, it has 57,000 alumni, including Vice President Joe Biden, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, and President Obama's mother.
